If most of your coffees are flat whites, lattes or cappuccinos, start with an espresso blend. If you drink it black and enjoy exploring different origins, try a single origin roasted for espresso.
Milk coffee → Espresso Blend.
Black espresso and a bit more exploration → Single Origin Espresso.
A grinder in your setup → whole bean.
No grinder → choose espresso grind.
What do you actually like in the cup?

Mostly milk coffee
An espresso blend is a straightforward starting point for flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos. The blend changes with Allways’ roaster rotation.

Black espresso
Choose the espresso roast option in Single Origin. It is for exploring the character of different coffees through your espresso machine.

Less caffeine
Decaf is an option for an espresso routine with less caffeine. It is caffeine-reduced rather than completely caffeine-free.

Allways’ Single Origin product lets you choose filter or espresso roast. If it is going through your Breville espresso machine, choose espresso roast as the starting point. The filter option is intended for filter brewing.
This does not mean lighter-roasted coffee cannot be used for espresso. It can, but it can take a different recipe and more adjustment. This guide is about an easier place to begin.
Whole bean, if you can grind it.
If your Breville has a grinder, or you have a separate one, choose whole bean. You can adjust the grind for the coffee in front of you rather than relying on one pre-ground setting to suit every basket and recipe.
If there is no grinder in your setup, choose espresso grind. Treat that as a starting point: machines, baskets, coffee and doses vary, so pre-ground coffee cannot promise the same result for everyone.
Buying a grinder is a separate decision. If that is what you need, our coffee grinder guide covers the options. You do not need a new machine just to try a different bag of coffee.
Check your machine’s manual for basket and grinder guidance. There are differences between models, so a bean-buying guide should not replace those instructions.
The next coffee might need a different setting.
Different coffees do not all behave the same way on the same grind setting. When a new bag arrives, make a small amount, taste it and adjust. Keeping your dose consistent makes it easier to work out what changed.
If the shot is sour or bitter, use our espresso taste troubleshooting guide. If it is a cleaning or descaling question, use the Breville descaling guide. Those are separate jobs from choosing the beans.
Fresh coffee, with a roast date.
Use the roast date and the roaster’s guidance, rather than assuming every coffee is at its best on exactly the same day. For more on storage and what changes over time, see how long coffee stays fresh.
Count doses, then choose the bag.
Two 18g doses a day use 504g over two weeks, before dialling-in waste. Four daily doses use 1,008g. A household with two people can fit either example, depending on how many coffees each person drinks.

Do I need special Breville-branded coffee beans?
The choice here is the coffee style and whether your setup can grind it. For milk drinks, start with an espresso blend; for black coffee and exploration, try a single origin espresso roast. Follow your machine’s own guidance on suitable beans and grinder use.
Can I choose filter roast?
You can experiment, but the espresso roast option is the simpler starting point for a Breville espresso machine. The filter roast in our Single Origin range is intended for filter brewing.
Will the same grind setting work for every delivery?
Not necessarily. Different roasters, coffees and roast styles can need different settings. Whole bean gives you the control to make that adjustment.
Can I try the coffee without subscribing?
Yes. The one-time Espresso Blend lets you order a bag with no automatic repeat orders. Choose your size and grind on the product page.
