The roastery

Twenty-seven years is a long time in coffee

Altura has been roasting in Adelaide since 1999. To put that in context, they were roasting before anyone in this country said "third wave" in a meeting, and they are still going while a lot of louder operations have come and gone.

They started in Beverley and now roast on Grange Road in Findon. Same family, same small-batch approach, no rebrand every second year.

Unglamorous consistency is exactly what you want from the people roasting your coffee.

What they roast covers a lot of ground: espresso blends, washed African single origins, and a decaf that does not taste like a punishment.

Approach

How they roast

"Wide spectrum" is the phrase they use for it, and in practice it means they are not locked into one roast profile and then bending every coffee to fit it.

The espresso blend sits at a classic medium. The Burundi goes slightly lighter to keep the fruit and the clarity intact. The decaf gets extra attention through the roast, because decaf loses its sweetness easily if you treat it like everything else.

It is roasting built around the coffee rather than around a house style. Rarer than it sounds.

Grange Rd Espresso Blend

Ethiopia, Honduras and Papua New Guinea · Medium roast

Product image
Grange Rd bag
1200 x 900

The flagship, and it has been there since day one. Named after the road they roast on. Honey sweetness up front, caramel and toffee through the middle, white chocolate once there is milk in it.

An everyday espresso in the best sense. It works at 6am when you are barely conscious, and it still rewards you on a Saturday when you are actually paying attention. Built for repetition without getting dull.

Grown high in Kayanza and processed at Kibingo for clarity and sweetness. Bright berries first, cacao and honey through the middle, black tea on the finish.

The useful part is that this one genuinely works as both filter and espresso. Altura roasted it with both in mind, so you are not compromising either way.

Decaf has a reputation problem, mostly earned, because most of it tastes like the colour beige. This one does not.

Soft cocoa, dried fig, and it holds a proper crema. The decaf you reach for after 3pm because you want it, not because you have to.

Bump the dose slightly. Decaf extracts differently and the extra couple of grams help the body.

About the roaster

Common questions

Questions people actually ask

Where is Altura Coffee roasted?

In Findon, Adelaide, at 253 Grange Road. They have been roasting in Adelaide since 1999 and started out in Beverley.

Is Altura Coffee family owned?

Yes. Same family, twenty-seven years, no private equity in sight.

What does the Grange Rd blend taste like?

Honey sweetness, caramel and toffee, and white chocolate in milk. It is a medium roast built from Ethiopian, Honduran and Papua New Guinean coffee, and it suits espresso machines, moka pots and plungers.

Can I get Altura coffee delivered?

Yes. Altura sell direct, and their coffee also comes through the Allways Coffee subscription, roasted to order and shipped free anywhere in Australia.

Why order Altura through Allways instead of going direct?

If Altura is the only coffee you ever want to drink, go direct. Genuinely. They are good and they deserve the business.

Allways is for the other situation. You like good Adelaide coffee, you do not want to drink the same bag forever, and you do not want to run six separate subscriptions to avoid that. One subscription, a different independent South Australian roaster each delivery, ground to whatever you actually brew with. Altura is one of fifteen.
